Youth and Mentors: Meeting Four Times A Year To Explore and Experience Spiritual Practices (those things which mark and make us followers of Jesus)

This program and its activities have been available for all youth who have been through confirmation at Salem Church beginning with the 2007 Confirmation Class. Youth and mentors meet four times during the confirmation class and then four times each year until they graduate from high school.

Past meetings have focused on the following spiritual practices: discernment/car rally (how to know God's will), forgiveness/visit to the place of the Amish schoolhouse shooting, hospitality/progressive dinner and mercy/bracelet sale to benefit refugees in Northern Uganda. Upcoming activities will focus on the following spiritual practices: simplicity/alternative Christmas gifts market (fall, 08), supplication and intercessory prayer (winter, 09) and stewardship (spring, 09).

This program was designed after coming to some realizations about our sincere and caring youth and the wonderful and supportive adults of this congregation and how they might be a great match for each other and that our culture often separates youth and adults. Youth are mainly surrounded by their peers. Given the many activities youth are involved in, the majority of time is spent with other youth. Given the high focus on education (college and graduate school) our youth are entering later and later into the world of work where in the past is where most of us encountered adults. In addition, we firmly believe that confirmation is not the end of the spiritual journey, but rather a major step in it and that to continue on that journey it would be important for our youth to learn spiritual practices that will help them continue in their commitment to follow Jesus. So, with all that in mind, we have brought the youth and mentors of our church together to learn from and support one another in this wonderful adventure called the Christian life.
